Our students begin a vocational qualification program in an industry area where there are currently shortages of trained tradespeople , while completing their Higher School Certificate (HSC). Our students have the opportunity to gain a Nationally Recognised qualification and/or a Statement of Attainment in their chosen vocational area and may be offered a School Based Apprenticeship or School Based Traineeship.
Hunter Trade College recognises that many young people do not find traditional classroom learning stimulating or satisfying. Our programs address this by providing a mix of practical learning in the chosen vocational area and three HSC academic courses taught with a focus on students acquiring employability and vocational skills. The courses are English, Mathematics, Computer Applications and Industry Based Learning (IBL).
Our students engage in substantial amounts of workplace learning through their participation in work placements and School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships. Workplace learning is scheduled for 2 days per week for Year 11 and 3 days per week for Year 12. This maximises the opportunity for workplace learning without disrupting HSC studies. Our two Work placement Officers assist the students to find work placements and School based Traineeships, while providing ongoing mentoring support.
This focus on workplace learning and having a clear career path towards a chosen vocation builds student confidence, self esteem and personal satisfaction. This ensures that the students acquire high level employability skills and are well prepared for the world of work while achieving their HSC.
